Long-Term Thinking (Explained)

Navigating the long-term thinking in a short-term world

Hey! It’s John 👋

Today you’ll learn:

  • Removing luck from success

Long-Term Thinking in a Short-Term World

This is a common theme in my life:

I’m setting goals

planning for the future

and suddenly, life throws a curveball

  • Personal dilemmas

  • Work problems

  • Ever-changing social and economic landscape

These are not just obstacles; they’re tests to our long-term vision.

Operationalizing long-term thinking is hard.

The longer term it is, the likelihood of more problems arise - it’s part of life’s ebb and flow.

It’s easy to get swayed by the immediate challenges and lose sight of our ultimate objectives.

These moments question our strategies and psychological fortitude.

Here lies the true test:

  • Can we differentiate between being patient and being stubborn?

  • Can we maintain the delicate balance of sticking to the plan while adapting to unforeseen changes?

This is the paradox of long-term thinking in a fast-paced world.

In growing your investment portfolio (via long-term strategy), you must be prepared to withstand economic downturns, bear markets, financial crises, and shifts in your personal life.

What is being tested here is your psychological fortitude.

Sticking to your strategy when challenges arise (with an emotional brain) is something that we must navigate.

Plant the Seeds Now

In this journey toward reclaiming time and accelerating productivity, be the farmer.

99% of people don’t even begin the process (I’ll admit, oftentimes I’m in that group too).

Overthinking and overanalyzing can lead to paralysis by analysis.

However, a bias towards action yields more outcomes than dwelling on ideas.

Ideas are abundant.

Execution is scarce.

A farmer doesn’t lose hope a month after planting seeds, understanding that the true rewards come during harvest season.

Long-term thinking involves patience and perseverance.

Nurturing plans and efforts, recognizing the most significant achievements often take time to materialize.

What are some long-term seeds in life?

This is best for things that compound over time, think:

  • Health

  • Wealth

  • Relationships

These are the domains where focused effort will lead to exponential results.

Factoring Out Luck

We shouldn’t have to rely on luck to get to our destination.

In 1,000 parallel universes, you want to be wealthy in 999 of them. You don’t want to be wealthy in the fifty of them where you got lucky, so we want to factor luck out of it … I want to live in a way that if my life played out 1,000 times, Naval is successful 999 times.

Naval Ravikant

Questions to dwell on:

  • What seeds must I plant?

  • What actions must I take?

  • What must I implement and execute?

We’re embracing frameworks that allow us to absorb shocks without derailing our long-term vision.

It’s about thriving through the ups and downs, staying focused on the horizon even when storms rage around us.

Keep striving, keep growing - the best is yet to come.
