Identity Shift for Exponential Growth
The science of designing your future self

Hey! It’s John,
Today you’ll learn:
The power of reinventing yourself for exponential growth
Alter Ego: How to align your identity with your ultimate aspirations
Strategies for embracing and manifesting your “Future Self”

Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.
Embrace Your Evolution
I’m not the same person I was last year, last month, or even last week.
What does altering your identity and compound interest have in common?
They both exponentially increase your returns over time.
It involves:
1) active change
OR… 2) passive stagnation.
To level up, it’s a continuous cycle of identity evolution.
Taking into consideration the Pareto Principle: 80/20 Rule (80% of results come from 20% of efforts), you have to shed 80% of your old self and focus on the 20% you’re working to become.
Shedding 80% of your former self sounds daunting.
But it’s that 20% that’s the powerhouse of potential.

How do I do this?
Think of it this way…
Looking back at your life, you can see you’ve changed over the course of last year, 3 years, 5 years, and 10 years.
Look at how far you’ve come.

We often discount this progress, but realizing the gains is monumental in self-development.
Projecting the future follows the same idea:
1 year from now, who are you?
3 years from now, who are you?
5 years from now, who are you?
What old habits or beliefs are you holding onto that are no longer serving you?
What 20% of your current identity is creating 80% of your positive results?

To give my own example:
Life is an infinite game. My three (3) core keystone goals I’m continuously improving or working toward:
Autopreneurship
Lifestyle Engineering
Digital Nomadism / Nomad Capitalism
At my own pace, I’m designing my personal life of my vision and automating my business life - aiming to automate 95% of monotonous tasks or ruthlessly eliminating heavy cognitive load, focusing on filling my days with the 5% that I enjoy doing. All of this, and working toward traveling the world full-time.
🌴 P.S. I’ll be on an adventure to Belize (March) and Thailand (November-December) in 2024, additionally, possibly looking to travel to Bali and Caribbean. Travel has allowed me to shift my identity multiple times, and I’m open to sharing it with all of you. If you’re interested in joining me, reply to this email :)
Before this, I was conditioned by friends, school, and society to follow traditional paths. I despised it; and it went against everything I believed I was.
You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish.
Science of Identity Shift: Designing your Alter Ego
“Identity [is] something that the best athletes in the world would use in order to help them compete and win. I started building a framework around, what I called, identity based performance… The method of building an Alter Ego for an athlete.” - Todd Herman (This Man Teaches Billionaires How To Think -YouTube Video Link, Leon Hendrix).
Todd helps codify identities for athletes. Examples below:
Kobe Bryant -> Black Mamba
Cristiano Ronaldo -> Ronaldo
Serena Williams

There’s a difference between what you are and who you are.
Why do Alter Egos work? In a way, you’re honed in on creating the ultimate version of you.
Dr. Benjamin Hardy explains it this way in his book 10x Is Easier than 2x, “When you embrace your Unique Ability, you stop worrying about what other people are doing. You stop competing entirely. But also, you realize in the realest sense who you truly are. You carve away everything that’s not “The David” (referring to the David Statue carved by Michelangelo) and transform yourself into your most powerful, valuable, and genuine self-expression.”
Screw Vision Statements, Write Identity Statements
What type of person do you need to become to get what you want?
Think:
Health (I’m an athlete)
Wealth (I’m an investor)
Relationships (I’m a connector)
James Clear’s (Author of Atomic Habits) emphasizes the importance of identity-based habits for the foundation of lasting behavior change.
For example:
“I’m the type of person who writes 1,000 words every day”
“I’m the type of person who never misses a workout”
“I’m the type of person who always stays in touch”
When you make your bed, you embody the identity of someone who is clean and organized. When you study, you embody the identity of someone who is studious. What identity are you embodying today? Who are your habits helping you become?
Who do you need to be to get what you want?
You must become the person (future self) to get what you deserve. It’s not handed to you. And wishful thinking will lead to passive stagnation (where we don’t want to end up).
By embracing a new identity, you're subconsciously working toward the identities you’ve set.
The important thing for this is to build evidence big or small behind each of these identities. Otherwise, there’s cognitive dissonance to your identity.
It’s an art and science of “manifesting” your life.
What’s the greater risk? Letting go of what people think - or letting go of how I feel, what I believe, and who I am?
My journey has taught me that reclaiming time isn’t about squeezing more hours into one day; it’s about creating space for your future self to emerge.
By stepping back, we allow ourselves to see the bigger picture and make quantum leaps vs. incremental steps.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Till next time, become the ultimate version of you.
